Why You Should Use A Segundo Volante
I’ve read articles for years now about how the Segundo Volante is overpowered in Football Manager.
There have been calls from time to time to nerf the role.
I don’t think it needs to be nerfed. I do think it’s worth studying, though.
You can see a few clips in the video above. I’ve noticed the following things about this role — both good and bad:
They lead to breaks that overwhelm the defense. By coming in a few strides behind the strikers, a Segundo Volante on attack gives the defenders a problem that is extremely difficult to deal with.
They tend to be wide open. It seems that Football Manager’s AI still can’t grasp the fact that these attacking players are goal scoring threats even though they don’t play as strikers. This logic also helps explain why strikerless tactics work so well: the game has a really hard time dealing with attackers that deliberately hold back.
They are impossible to stop if they can shoot from range. We’ve been scoring tons of goals from range with these guys. In contrast, my Augsburg save saw a lot of young Segundo Volantes who couldn’t control their long shots.
They are a defensive liability. Both goals we conceded against Port F.C. came because the Segundo Volantes weren’t able to get back to their defensive duties in time. We were unfortunate to face a team with midfielders who could shoot from range.
Have you played around with the role? What have you experienced?
