Nothing in New York City stays secret for long.
You probably know already that Pelé came out of retirement to play his first game with the New York Cosmos on June 15, 1975. What you probably don’t know, however, is the media frenzy that came up before all of that happened.
I’ve only got access to The New York Daily News, which means that this record is going to be somewhat incomplete. However, I thought it would be interesting to share with you the original articles I’ve been able to locate, going all the way back to April 11, 1975.
So there you have it. Sometimes the history books smooth over just how difficult these negotiations can be in real life.
