Before we get going with this project, I want to introduce to you the concept behind DarthFurion’s World Super League. This is different than most Football Manager leagues out there, and has some very attractive features that makes it the best of its kind in my mind.
You can read all of the technical details on this extensive FM Scout post. However, it will take you time to read through all of that, and some of the details do not apply to this project. Instead, let me give you the highlights.
Worldwide Competition
The most compelling part about this add-on is the huge number and variety of teams that are included. There are 1,024 clubs within the same six-tier league structure, representing over 70 different countries. This ranges from the most reputable and obvious clubs in England, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy down to some extremely obscure and little-known clubs.
This is the ultimate antidote for football boredom. Tired of the same league with the same competition? Give this one a try, and watch as teams from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia wind up in the same league as teams from South America.
Though most of the individual leagues share names with real-life leagues, they are clearly different in structure. A quick look at the teams we will compete against in Major League Soccer should give you an idea:
Unrestricted Transfers
There are no silly nationality or home-grown rules in this competition. Managers can buy players from anywhere in the world without worrying about fitting some arbitrary nationality requirements. This is key for the way that I like to play, and for the more experimental aspects of this project.
In other words, if you manage a team in South Korea or Japan and want to fill it with 18-year-old Brazilian wonderkids, you can do so. There is no arbitrary rule or requirement to prevent you from managing the way you want to manage.
Packed Schedules
We’ll see this in detail as we move along. The schedules here are packed and frantic, especially if you make it in cup competitions. There aren’t a lot of off weeks in this league, and you really need to have a deep squad if you want to compete. Take a look at our upcoming schedule for an idea:
Premier League Setup
In this version, the Premier League includes 80 clubs divided into 4 randomly generated divisions. The top teams of each division will then play each other in a round-robin championship playoff.
The key behind this setup is that it allows for heavy competition once you hit the highest level. In user-created fantasy leagues with top levels limited to 20 teams, it is inevitable that some truly large and reputable clubs will find themselves relegated and on the decline. With this mod, you won’t find yourself getting lucky because Bayern Munich or Manchester United were relegated and saw their fortunes dwindle. Winning the Premier League is tough, and takes quite a bit of time.
Difficulty
Assuming that we’re not relegated right away, we will likely be in Major League Soccer for quite some time. This is because only the team in first place moves on to the Premier League:
This screenshot will also give you an idea of the kind of prize money that we’re dealing with. DarthFurion’s addon is excellent because it rewards teams richly for success – even teams that might not be the wealthiest or have the biggest fanbase at the start of the game.
I’ve played around with a lot of mods in my Football Manager years, and I keep coming back to this one. And that’s why we’re using it for this project.
