The First Championship Manager Sequel
Championship Manager’s first sequel came out in September 1993. Championship Manager 93 was actually more than just a cosmetic upgrade, boasting features like real player names, the inclusion of the Premier League for the first time, and a number of other important quality of life improvements.
However, PCZone didn’t think too much of it.
It’s interesting to note that the biggest problem PCZone had with this game was how slowly it performed. I’m not sure if the “Latest Results” service was patched later down the line, or if it was completely removed. It does sound frustrating to have to wait for all the other scores to show up before you can do anything, however.
The graphics in this version seem dated. I can understand Championship Manager 01/02 and games around that time — but this one simply looks old.
It’s really interesting to look back at the memory requirements at the time. 640K RAM seems impossibly small today, and 2 MB of hard disk space is probably less space than either one of these screenshots takes.
And, of course, the most interesting part is the fact that you could upgrade to this version for about a fourth the price of buying the complete game. Sadly, we don’t see that sort of thing anymore.
