Taiwan
You’re probably wondering why I decided to go to Taiwan at this point in my save.
I mean, part of it is that I really needed to get away from PanSa East FC. Things were going pretty bad at the end there. If I had stuck around, I’m afraid that the team would have completely fallen apart under my leadership.
However, there’s more to it than just this.
I’ve always wanted to do a Taiwan project on Football Manager. Not a huge one, of course — just a couple of seasons here and there, enough to get a taste for it.
I feel that way about a lot of the smaller, less heralded countries in Football Manager. You know the ones I’m talking about: the countries you need to download special editor data files just to access.
This won’t be the last stop we make at some random country in this project, I’ll promise you that much.
Family Ties
There’s more to it than that, of course. I’ve got family ties to Taiwan as well.
My wife is from Taiwan, and her family still resides there. We’ve been back several times, and are hoping to go back again sometime in the future.
I speak Mandarin Chinese fluently, and am also proficient in Taiwanese Hokkien (which is a completely different language, believe it or not). While I’ve never actually lived in Taiwan for an extensive period of time, I’m quite familiar with the culture and with the way of life out there.
Of course, none of that is necessary for a Football Manager project to feel “real.” Things will be fun even if you’ve never actually visited the place you’re playing in. The key to effective immersion is your mentality and attitude, not whether you’ve physically set foot in the country.
But it does help to have real ties to the place you’re managing.
