Signs of Football Manager Addiction
After some mindless surfing on Reddit, I came across this interesting post by June Fernan on signs of gaming addiction:
Some of June’s additions here were strangely specific. I thought it might be interesting to add onto some of these points with my own Football Manager experience.
My Football Manager Addiction Experience
I should start out by confessing that I have been addicted to Football Manager.
I don’t consider myself an addict today. I usually play for about 30 minutes or so a day — maybe a little bit more, since my current matches have lasted almost 20 minutes on average.
However, there was a time a few years back when Football Manager really started to take over my life. I had a few problems at work and in my personal life, and decided to ignore those problems by spending tons of time on a variety of Football Manager saves.
It wasn’t quite as extreme as what June described — but I did have my share of 12+ hour Football Manager sessions, occasionally played during meetings at work, and so on.
It’s nice when you insist on recording every one of your matches to share with the internet. That makes it a lot less likely that you’re going to sneak in a game or two during an otherwise dull meeting.
Anyway, based on my experience, below are a few signs that you might be playing a tad too much Football Manager.
Signs of Football Manager Addiction
Working on tactics while in the shower. Or while walking the dog. Or while running. Or while singing “Happy Birthday” to your youngest child.
Reaching for the nearest bottle at the first sign of a poor performance.
Actually spending time customizing your in-game character. I mean, you can’t even see the wristwatch or whatever when you play the actual game.
Spending thousands of hours in the pre-game editor setting stuff up. I understand trying to set things up realistically, but, seriously, some of you guys go a little bit too far with your fantasy leagues…
Confusing sports. No, you can’t run an effective counterattack when you’re playing pickup basketball with your friends.
What do you think? Any other ideas?
