Invading University Park
This one was far too close for comfort.
We got off to a surprisingly good start. Alpha Doe scored a header from a corner in the second minute, and Cesar Aldana followed up with two goals in quick succession. We had a 3-0 lead after 17 minutes, and looked good to go.
Fernando Garcia scored one for Penn State in the 25th minute, but I wasn’t worried. I was excited when Aldana scored his third goal in the 26th minute, putting the score up to 4-1 and securing him an early hat trick.
Penn State came right back again, however. Luis Felipe Castillo scored in the 27th minute, and Alfred Giron added a goal of his own in the 41st. We went into halftime with a slim 4-3 advantage.
I made a few changes that weakened the squad considerably. Guess what happened?
We won anyway.
This wasn’t exactly my proudest moment, but at least we made it happen. I’m not sure how well I’m going to sleep after this one.
Penn State looked dominant at times, and had me very concerned near the midway point of the second half. We pulled it off, but just barely.
I don’t want any more close calls like that.
Limited Options
The board apparently wants me to win the conference despite giving me only “limited options” for wages and transfers.
Now, I’ve got to break character a little bit here to let you know what is going on.
This editor data file that I’m using is set up so that we can’t buy, well, anybody. Transfers are only allowed during a narrow 5-week timeframe in the summer, and we can only sign a maximum of 4 players.
Adding to our woes is the fact that we can’t import any players from abroad. I mean, we can’t, no matter how good they are. The limit imposed by the editor data file is players with a 200 PA, which is absolutely 100% insane.
There’s no robbing the cradle here, I’m afraid.
Anyway, as a result, we have more than enough wage and transfer budget room available:
I mean, our wage budget is at $160,000 per week, which is actually low in Football Manager terms. Our players, however, cost a grand total of $18,829 a week, giving us a huge amount of room on that end.
I’ve been given about $6 million for transfers, and had a hard time spending even $300,000 of that. Our only shot at using the entire budget would be to buy a high reputation player, which is something that we almost certainly won’t be able to do at this level.
It’s similar to the problem we had in the early days of the Yanbian save. We’ve got a lot of money, but there’s simply no possible place for us to spend it.
The Season Begins
Well, after all of that nonsense, we’re finally ready to start the season.
We’re going away to face Oregon State in a match that should be exciting. I think we’ll win, though I know we will miss Daryl Daley, who twisted his ankle the other day.
