How To Avoid Boredom
It’s actually pretty common to see people feel bored or disenchanted with Football Manager.
Below are a few tips that might help you avoid stagnation in your FM journey.
Set Up Specialized Rules
There are tons of specialized rules you can adopt to make your save more engaging.
Common ones include:
A youth academy save, where you can’t purchase players and have to work with only the players that come up through your youth system.
A youth to gold save, where you don’t buy any players 20 years old or over, and strip your club of players over a certain age (usually 30 and over) as soon as you arrive.
House rules forbidding you to buy players from certain places, or forcing you to only buy players who speak certain languages or have certain nationalities.
For my Kashiwa Reysol World Super League save, I will make sure that at least 50% of our players are Japanese at all times. We’ll also work on removing European and Brazilian players and replacing them with foreigners from other East Asian countries.
Learn The History
It’s not hard to do research on your club, and it can be pretty enlightening.
Kashiwa are owned by the Hitachi corporation, and were originally called Hitachi back in the old Japan Soccer League that formed in 1965. The club originally started in Kodaira, about 60 kilometers away from Kashiwa.
Kashiwa won the J2 league title in 2010 and followed that up with a J1 league title victory in 2011 — a remarkable feat. They were relegated again a few years later, but managed to move back up to the J1 league in 2019.
Learning basic things like this helps you connect with your save on a deeper level, and creates curiosity around some of the results you’ve enjoyed.
Embrace Newgens
The life blood of any Football Manager save is invariably its newly generated players.
Newgens come into your Football Manager world with a blank slate — without much more than an age, a name, a nationality, and attributes.
If you choose, you can create entire back stories for them, turning your save from a few pixels on the screen into a world of its own.
The choice is yours, of course. However, the more you dive into this world, the more entertaining and interesting it can become. And that will help you fight off boredom for a long time to come.
