Blowing It
As I explained in this post, I gave myself a few advantages in my current Hallam Youth Academy project:
However, nudging things up a bit doesn’t mean that you’re always going to win.
I learned that in our third season. We had played extremely well during the first two seasons, managing to secure promotion both years without many problems.
That took us to Super League 3, where we were underdogs as usual:
We started this season off extremely hot, capping it off with a big 5 game winning streak in early December:
By early April, we were top of the league:
And we secured promotion for the third straight season only a few days later:
But, of course, it’s never quite that easy.
Try as we might, we simply couldn’t get the wins we needed to secure the title. Most alarmingly, we had an awful losing streak at the very end of the season that threatened to knock us out of first base.
It got to the point where our goalkeeper Sam Killock had to speak up to rally the troops:
In the end, though, it was all in vain:
We wound up finishing in second place, a single point behind Wigan:
And this is what that collapse looked like:
It’s hard to figure out precisely what went wrong. It likely wasn’t a tactical issue, nor do I think it was a morale problem. Honestly, I think it was probably just one of those random things that happen from time to time.
