Back To Ingolstadt
As I mentioned yesterday, I’m back to managing at FC Ingolstadt.
Let me give you some background. Over two decades ago, I spent two years of my life serving as a missionary for the LDS Church in southern Germany and Austria.
Most of my time in Germany was spent in Augsburg. I knew about Ingolstadt, of course, and actually spent a day there helping the missionaries assigned to that city. I didn’t see much more of the city than the central square — but I liked the vibe of the small town.
I’ve managed FC Augsburg in a number of Football Manager saves over the years. Augsburg is a frustrating team to manage, a team that has a pretty bland identity, one that lacks a talented goalscorer or a fascinating wonderkid.
Ingolstadt, however, has always struck me as a team that I could bend, shape, and mold anyway I like. And that’s why I’ve spent more time managing Ingolstadt than any other team.
You may recall an earlier FC Ingolstadt project of mine from a few years back — one that didn’t last very long. All I remember about that one is feeling frustrated that we couldn’t win a match no matter what we did. I think I blamed our failure on injuries and a big contract to a centerback.
Well, this time around things will be different:
We’re using the World Super League, which means that the sky is the limit.
We’re going for the Youth Academy Challenge, which means most of our players will be legitimately homegrown.
I’m using overpowered downloaded tactics, mostly for the sake of just seeing how far we can get as quick as possible.
We’ll see how this one goes. My biggest regret is that I no longer have the time I once did to play Football Manager all day long. Unfortunately, other priorities (including blogging and creating YouTube videos) have taken priority.
Still — I’ve got a feeling I can turn us into world beaters before FM26 is finally released.
